Suspended Players

Earlier in the thread, someone asked if there was a ruling about suspension if players leave the bench.

In the VHSL handbook, I found this:

A school whose substitute players or bench personnel enter the playing field/court during a verbal or physical altercation shall be subject to a fine as stated below and an official VHSL Warning to that specific sports program.

A player or coach who engages in fighting, biting or aggressive physical contact shall be ineligible for the team's next two contests. The second incident in which a player or coach engages in fighting, biting or aggressive physical contact in the same sport in the same season carries a minimum four-game suspension penalty.

So, it appears that there are VHSL rules that would apply here. If either school does not take action, I would think the VHSL could take their own action against the schools, coaches, players, etc.

Biggin, I especially noticed that at Appy on Friday night. Thought that Appy lost their composure at times which may have lost them the game. I hope that no one still thinks that Basketball is a non contact sport.

You sure do make some biased posts for someone who umpires high school softball. Maybe someone should report you to the commissioner.

Haven't umpired softball in at least 3 years and as such, I do no consider myself an umpire; therefore, I have no commissioner. I will tell you, though, that when I was umpiring, I was always fair and tried to the best of my ability to enforce/interpret the rules. Just ask around, 99% of the people who have seen me call a game know this to be true. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, they are like *******s, everyone has one. I do have some knowledge about the people(adults) mentioned and their coaching abilities/actions. So, for you to say I have a biased opinion, everyone on here does.

And yes, RT, I agree with your statement along withe biggin's about the P.V./Appy game. P.V. kept their composure while Appy definately lost theirs. :snickerpup:

Goins is the same kid who kept losing it during football season. Seems like I recall him taking fits nearly every game I saw Burton play, including one particular moment when he was punting to Kelly and nearly got in a fight with the guy who came back to try and block the punt. Doesn't seem like he can keep himself under control, and that's never a good sign. Can't speak for the other two. But good riddance.

Im saying that each team/administration is different, could interpet the altercation differently and hand down different punishments or no punishment at all. Its like when a college coach kicks someone off the team as opposed to Bobby Bowden only making them run the bleachers or Urban Meyer suspending a kid for one half of a game. Not everyone is going to have the same judgment. Im sure the kids past incidents and character will come into play, and what those kids mean to each program will come into play.

and actually the more I think about it, the more people that complain to administration at kelly, it will put more pressure on administration to make a more stern decision regarding the offenders than administration really wants to make. More people will say, well Williams kicked his kids off the team and expect the same thing at Kelly when in fact those kids may not even deserve to be kicked off the team. Williams made a good decision but come on, its not like Goins was a model citizen to begin with. That kid lives on thin ice.

if both teams broke VHSL rules and only JIB gets punished, something is really wrong

You'll get no argument from me on the justification for the actions that were taken against the Burton players. I don't know if the administration at Kelly will hold their players and coaches accountable. I have some serious doubts about it. But, from what I saw, it warrants some type of action. Only time will tell if it happens.

I've talked to many people involved with this and have also been reading the messages posted here. I think it needs to be said that both Burton and Kelly players were involved as noted and that it was a two way street regarding the altercations. In discussions many Burton people agree that the players that were kick off the team deserved it and as a program Burton will be better for the actions they have taken. It has been described by one person close to the program that this was the most outrageous and embarrassing thing they have seen in high school sports.

I know the Burton/Kelly rivalry is a heated one but over the past couple of years it seems that the Kelly fans are the ones that really want to instigate or insight some type of an altercation. Granted Burton is not completely innocent by any means, but I know for a fact that Kelly parents of the youth programs have come to Norton and called out players using racial slurs and other obscene comments.

The actions of the Kelly fans and parents should have been an embarrassment to their school and basketball program. To have a parent continue to harass a member of the opposing team and use racial slurs is totally uncalled for and the parent should have been ejected from the game. If a fan or parent of Norton had done the same I would expect them to be ejected as well. No matter how ****y or obnoxious a player acts they are still a child and should not be taunted by an adult or fan in the stands!

As for the altercation, it was a sad event in LPD sports and each school should deal with the students involved. Burton has done so and did it swiftly. Kelly still has yet to deal with the matter and I have been informed that probably nothing will happen, as far as suspensions or kicked off the team.

Also noted on here several times was the altercation at Appalachia. There have been two major incidents in LPD sports this year and those have a common denominator - KELLY fans and parents! Both altercations involved racial slurs and overtones. I think the administration at Kelly as well as the Wise County school board should take a long hard look at these events. They may not like the results of such an investigation but something needs to be done to address and stop such altercations in the future.
